I would assume the chain has now a clasp at the back of the neck. The way the heart shaped amethyst is mounted hardly allows for a hidden clasp there, but who knows. The rather imperfect appearence of the necklace makes me doubt such a well-thought-out solution.
Regarding the eyelet I was thinking of something similar to the pearl pendant of the Duchess of Windsor - two hooks which made it possible to attach the pendant exactly underneath the largest middle pearl of her necklace (at least that's how I remember it). Again, I think it's too sophisticated an idea.
There are 13 pearls between each amethyst and the next, and on each side of the pendant are 6 - I guess that's also an indication that Boris is right and the chain is devided and attached to each side of the middle part. If the chain would indeed run behind the large amethyst, there shouldn't be more than 4 or 5 sections visible on each side.
The exchanges are fun, Nellie, and a most welcome distraction from an otherwise very boring day, workwise.
