Shirley Bury, in Jewellery, The International Era 1789-1910 mentions Massin quite often. The following extracts come from Bury. 1867 Paris Exhibition “Massin, then an outworker whose productions were exhibited by several French firms in 1867, was enabled, by the withdrawal of another jeweller, to show on his own account as well.” 1889 exhibition “Massin, who did not exhibit under his own name at the Paris 1889 Exhibition but furnished colleagues with work,…” From a note: “Oscar Massin born in 1829 in Ličge, studied at the Academy there as a designer, went to Paris and worked for Fester, successor of Viennot; in 1854 he joined Rouvenat as head of his workshop, then worked for Viette on a diadem for the Empress Eugénie, in 1855; went to London for a year and a half. Returned to Paris; set up on his own account in the Rue des Moulins, 1863.” In reading about the exhibitions, I assume that "productions were exhibited by several French firms" refers to pieces Massin made (and designed) whereas "furnished colleagues with work" is not so obvious.
